Tune In Affirmations
Creative wellness app prototype
PURPOSE
For this User Experience and Interaction Design Project, I worked with two UX experts to conduct moderated remote user testing (MRUT) on the Tune In Affirmations app. The purpose of this study was to identify areas of improvement related to: listening experience customization, target area understandability, and app navigation. Our goal was to discover usability problems and solutions to improve the app in three areas: 1) customization feature discoverability, understandability, and usefulness; 2) focus area understandability; and 3) app navigability. Our testing included 6 participants that we remotely evaluated as they completed a series of tasks developed for the goals above. In addition to these tasks, we developed pre- and post-task questions for further analysis. Our results uncovered usability issues regarding: 1) discoverability of the affirmation feature; 2) feedback confusion on the focus area; 3) understandability of focus area labels; and 4) discoverability and accessibility of the settings panel.
RESULTS
The prototype featured a minimal interface with time-based controls and mood-selective affirmations. It allowed users to set intervals between affirmations to reduce compulsive screen interaction. The feedback highlighted the app’s calming aesthetic and potential for use in meditation or focused work. Our team developed 7 recommendations for improvement, communicated through mock-ups and a presentation to our client.

METHODS
A significant portion of the project was making sense of user feedback on the app. We encouraged users to share thoughts freely as they completed each task. This gave our team lots of notes to analyze related to task completion, user experience, and usability. I was tasked with reading through these notes and transforming them into a Rainbow Sheet — a sheet that categorizes feedback by color. Combing through responses to find patterns and tensions in the app usage revealed 7 key problem areas of the app:
